Throwing In The Towel

At some point during a match, Sophia’s partner hung a towel over the net by the net post. As one of Sophia’s opponents hit a shot, the ball hit the towel and landed on her side of the net. Sophia tried to return the shot but couldn’t get to it in time.

Whose point is it?

Since an opponent hit the ball that hit the towel before landing on Sophia’s side of the net, the point belongs to Sophia’s team.

Since the ball hit the towel, it was a hindrance, and a let should be played.

The opponent’s shot was perfectly legal, and they won the point.
